• Leave it to our own Uncle Vern to bring us the first of stone fruit season! Summer solstice may be six weeks away, but to us, the season begins with Uncle Vern’s certified organic Tasty Rich Apriums. The Tasty Rich aprium is a favorite apricot-plum hybrid that resembles an apricot in appearance and flavor. Fuerte Avocados!

• Fuerte is the original prized San Diego avocado, the favorite of avocado growers (who tend to know their avocados), and a runaway favorite among Squeeze Players, especially original SPer Erica! Since Fuertes ripen in the cold season and Hass in the warm season, San Diego is naturally guac-town year-round, but instead, Fuertes are now endangered: even though the flavor of local Fuertes is far superior to imported Hass, grocers prefer to import Hass from the southern hemisphere during our winter because Hass avos are more tolerant of abuse during travel and on grocery shelves, and because their skin hides bruises. Save the Furtes!
• Unlike the bumpy-skin Hass avocado, Fuerte skin remains green when ripe. Feel for a light give, just as you would with a Hass.
• Fuertes can be refrigerated when ripe to extend their lifespan by a few days, but the real trick is refrigerating while the fruit is still hard. Simply transfer from fridge to counter when you'd like your avocado to ripen. With this trick you can keep your Fuerte supply for weeks. So stock up with this steal of a deal from Squeeze Play!
