Be part of a hands-on, grassroots nonprofit effort that is invigorating San Diego's organic food system by making awesome locally grown fruit and veggies convenient, affordable, accessible, and jump-up-and-down exciting to San Diegans!
The Front Office Intern loves to take excellent care of the families that Squeeze Play! serves. This friendly, loving, deeply caring, and always professional approach to phone calls, emails, and in-person interactions is the most important qualification. It means talking to a fruit and veggie newbie about the Fuyu persimmons, Barlett pears, fennel, and Butternut squash in his farm box and how to enjoy each at its ideal ripeness and flavor. It means extending a hearty welcome to new Squeeze Players and answering questions about how the program works. It means talking to folks with money struggles and figuring out ways that we can keep them connected to the real food they rely on while staying within their budget.
You'll also get a glimpse of the extraordinary coordination that goes into Squeeze Play!'s weekly pickups and deliveries. You'll help juggle the details like special delivery instructions, fruit and veggie likes and dislikes, and communication when an item is substituted or unavailable.
- Requirements:
- A passion for organic fruit and veggies!
- Rockstar service skills, as described above
- Comfort and competency on the computer (preferably Apple, natch)
- The ability and focus to carefully follow directions
Schedule: Wednesdays are our big delivery day, so Wednesday availability for a morning or swing shift is required. Availability on two other weekdays is preferred.
Location: Squeeze Play! HQ at 6350 Riverdale St, San Diego, CA 92120, in the Grantville area of Mission Valley right across the freeway from SDSU. Most hours need to be done in the office, but some work can be done from your location.
Compensation: This is an unpaid internship suitable for a student or community member. Interns are eligible for Squeeze Play!'s team member discount, which makes Squeeze Play!'s terrific fruit and veggies even more affordable!

Do you know your produce? Can you tell a cherimoya from a white sapote, an English pea from a sugar snap? Know the difference between a Fuerte and a Hass or a Hachiya and a Fuyu? Do you know what the difference is between conventional and organically-grown and certified and biodynamic? Yes? Awesome! Not yet? That's okay – if you're passionate about learning, you don't have to have all the answers now!
- Sample responsibilities:
- Quality-check, taste test, and write about produce from farms
- Cultivate and sustain relationships with local farms – as a representative of Squeeze Play!, you are a key support system for the San Diego area farmers who are our lifeline for real food
- Lend your produce expertise to answering questions about fruit and veggies, sharing trivia for the blog and newsletter, and providing tips on storage and preparation
- Produce pickups and farmer networking, primarily in central San Diego (a hatchback or larger vehicle, drivers license, and insurance are required)
- Friendly, professional, and clear phone, email, and in-person communication with farmers and produce sources
- Help identify possible sources for new fruit and veggie offerings
- Collaborate on Squeeze Play! weekly menu planning and produce descriptions
- Create educational materials to increase awareness about different types of fruit and veggies, when they are ripe, how to prepare them, and how to enjoy them
Schedule: Currently, the key days and times for the Produce Scout are Tuesday afternoons, Wednesday mornings, and Sunday mornings. Availability for at least one of those times is required. Additional responsibilities, farm visits, and networking can be done on a flexible schedule.
Location: As Produce Scout, it is important that you are out in the field! Your time will be split between produce sources (such as farms and farmers markets) primarily in central San Diego and Squeeze Play! HQ at 6350 Riverdale St, San Diego, CA 92120, in the Grantville area of Mission Valley right across the freeway from SDSU.

Team Scout Internship!

This is an HR-focused internship within a thriving San Diego organization. Be part of a hands-on, grassroots nonprofit effort that is invigorating San Diego's organic food system by making awesome locally grown fruit and veggies convenient, affordable, accessible, and jump-up-and-down exciting to San Diegans!
- Sample responsibilities:
- Coordinate ongoing hiring of Squeeze Play! team members
- Review resumes, recommend top prospects, and conduct phone screenings
- Plan teambuilding activities like monthly hikes and quarterly potlucks
- Write bios and lead interviews with team members
- Network job openings with local colleges, like-minded groups, and placement organizations
- Maintain up-to-date information and paperwork for all team members
- Check in with all team members weekly
- Pack and share Wednesday morning snacks
- Draft and edit job descriptions
- Examine staffing costs and make recommendations for areas in need of adjustment
- Participate in in-person interviews
- Assist with team member communication and compensation
The Team Scout does not directly hire or terminate, but plays a key role in discussions and decisions.
Schedule: Wednesday mornings are the critical day and time. In-office availability on other weekdays is preferred so that you can participate in in-person interviews and other office-centric responsibilities, but days and times are flexible.
